It’s Feb. 12, and this year it marks the 201st birthday of Abraham Lincoln. We all know slavery ended during his presidency, and he was the first president to be assassinated. But here are some tidbits about Lincoln you might not know. Celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday by getting to know him better.

1. Worse than Friday the 13th

Things were different back then, but the date Lincoln was shot is a dreaded day for many Americans: April 15, tax day. So, if you ending up in tax debt is the worst thing that happens to you on April 15, remember: It could be worse.

2. Can’t win ‘em all

Before Lincoln was elected president, he ran for the U.S. Senate twice. He lost both times.

3. Booth wasted no time

John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln just six days after the end of the Civil War. Booth had originally planned to kidnap Lincoln and demand he release Confederate prisoners, but when Booth heard Lincoln promote voting rights for black people, he decided to assassinate him.

4. Keeping the peace

Though the Civil War broke out during his term, Lincoln showed that not all Republicans are quick to go to war. The Confederacy nearly dragged the United Kingdom into the war, but Lincoln avoided it through diplomacy.

5. Man of few words

Nowadays, presidents give speeches that last more than an hour. The Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history, was a little more than two minutes long.

6. That prediction was way off

During the Gettysburg Address, which was so named because it took place in Gettysburg, Penn., he said “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.”

7. Abraham what?

I have always kind of resented the fact that I don’t have a middle name, but even Abraham Lincoln didn’t have a middle name, so I suppose I am in good company.

8. College? What’s college?

Nowadays candidates with an Ivy League education are more likely to be elected. Abraham Lincoln’s formal education consisted of about 18  months of schooling, total.

9. What kind of Republican are you?

Though Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president, he didn’t fit the Republican stereotypes that are common today. He preferred national values over states rights, shifted focus away from the Constitution and onto the Declaration of Independence and he never hunted or fished because he did not like to kill animals for any reason.

10. Still crazy, after all these years

In 1876, nine years after his death, two men attempted to steal Lincoln’s body and hold it for ransom. They got as far as removing the coffin from the sarcophagus before lawmen approached and scared them off; they escaped but were later arrested at their most frequented drinking hole.
