We all know the feeling of being at the video store without a clue what to get. You have two DVDs in your hand that you're unhappy with and a hole in your heart. Lost Treasures is a feature we have at Gotchamovies that highlights a new film every Wednesday. These will be films that may have slipped under your radar and you can rent at your local Blockbuster or Nexflix tonight. You are not guaranteed to enjoy them but they are guaranteed to be quality films.

In 2009 21,000 movies were made in the United States. Out of these 21,000, 520 were actually released to theaters. The rest died the slow death of the straight to VD market or were never seen outside of the creators living room. Think about that. 20,000 films that didn't get their due. Sure the majority of those films were absolute garbage but as everyone knows there is a small handful of gems in that pile. Films like Rocket Science , Brick , Boondock Saints , Cube , Hamlet 2 , Ginger Snaps , the list could go on forever.

Although the third sequel to the forgotten Universal Soldier franchise is not one of these amazing films, it definitely qualifies as a sleeper. A through and through tough guy action movie that wouldn't have killed in theaters but deserved the release either way. In 1992 Jean Claude Van Damme (JCVD) and Dolph Lundgren played two soldiers who were wounded in battle and entered a government project. This project turned them into "super-soldiers" who are almost unable to be killed. Over a decade later the two soldiers are thawed out once again, this time with half a dozen more super soldiers, to fight to the death in Universal Soldier: Regeneration .

To describe the plot of Universal Soldiers 3 would be implying that anyone watching US 3 actually cares. Yes there is a plot and it's not completely retarded but lets be real for a second. We are here to see blood and bone. Nothing else. Although JCVD does look older (he is now 50) he looks no less deadly than he did in 1992. Now with old age starting to creep in a little, Van Damme has the look of a man who's seen a lot and has fought a lot. The same could be said for Dolph Lundgren which makes them both perfect actors for this film. They both hold their own with great performances that do not feel forced. They seem like naturals in their familiar home of burned down buildings and sub machine guns.

US 3 also introduces Andrei "the pitbull" Arlovski , who is one of the top ten heavy weights in the world right now, as the main universal soldier. Arlovski does a great job as a robot-type killing machine with lightning fast fists and an awesome switchblade-ish shank that comes screaming out of his arm to cut his enemies throats. I will be excited to actually see this guy in a speaking role with some more intricate fight choreography. Could be big!

In a recent podcast by Fat and Skinny Go to the Movies, Skinny talks about US 3 and how Jean Claude plays a soldier called into battle one last time and although he looks tired and used up he is ready to go out and fight with full force. Skinny talks about how this mirrors Jean Claude as an actor being called out to do yet another action film (he has starred in 37) and how he does it flawlessly once again. I felt like this was a perfect reflection of JCVD's performance and his over all mind set. It would be interesting to see how JCVD would respond.

Overall US 3 is not a great film. Do not look this way for compelling dialogue (in fact there is little dialogue in the whole film), sunsets on the beach or a story of a boy becoming a man. US 3 is about fighting and killing. If your looking for some war-like action mixed with some great hand to hand combat and a healthy dose of JCVD and Mr. Lundgren look no further. Universal Soldier: Regeneration offers us the ass kicking we have loved time and time again from Jean Claude and will gladly accept one more time.
