Anderson office manager, Wayne Mickey posted...

The manager of the Anderson Local Census Office posted his belief that census takers are still required in Pickens and Laurens counties.

Anderson office manager, Wayne Mickey posted that most of the temporary positions involve visiting houses from door-to-door that haven't returned a 2010 Census questionnaire.

“The census is a constitutional mandate that's too big for the federal government to carry out alone,” Mickey added. “That's why we must build an army of local people to ensure everyone is counted. Right now, we need more people in that army.”

Also, he added that the questionnaire is slated to be sent through the U. S. mail in the next few days. Already most of the households have received a letter from the Census Bureau reminding them that the questionnaire is coming and the importance of filling it out and sending it back.

In the next few months, the Census Bureau is reported to recruit more than 12,000 people to work in the 2010 Census across South Carolina and about 1.4 million across the country.

Salaries for census takers begin at $11.25 an hour, varying on basis of job and location. Census takers also are paid for training and on-the-job mileage, he said.
