Floppy Discs Are Dying Out

Dinosaurs of technology

Up until now, Sony had still produced Floppy Discs and had sold as many as 8.5 million units in Japan alone as of 2008. Sony has been producing them since they started with 3.5-inch floppies way back in 1981.

Although demand for the discs has fallen significantly, until now Sony was selling enough to keep producing them. However that will officially halt as of March 2011, when Sony will finally completely cease producing Floppy Discs of any kind. This comes a year after fellow Floppy producers Hitachi Maxell and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media also stopped producing the outdated format.

Sony also quit producing Floppy Drives themselves as far as September of last year.

To me it is surprising that Floppy Discs were still in production, as I can’t even recall the last time I saw one . . . However they do have some uses, especially if you still use older machines. Either way, you may want to start collecting them now before they disappear completely.

On a related note, imagine a day when your kids don’t know what floppy discs are. Or rather, stop imagining.
